Vietnam’s ‘Queen of Primates’; Saving the Red-Shanked Douc
In the coastal forest Reserve of Son Tra in Central Vietnam, small populations of the endangered Red-Shanked Douc Langur - often described as the ‘Queen of Primates’ due to its beautiful colouring - have managed to survive a wide range of threats. In February 2026 I visited the Reserve and discovered how, thanks to the work of conservationists along with a changing culture towards wildlife conservation in Vietnam, Douc Langur populations are recovering and there is now real hope for their future.

Introducing ‘Wild World’
On my 60th birthday I was given a world map by my family. But this was no ordinary map. It was a beautiful handdrawn illustrated map of the natural world - the wild world. No humans, cities or man-made structures. Just nature and wildlife. And I learned that the map was the result of years of work by artist Anton Thomas.
